Meeting space & writers’ residence

Meeting Space and Writers’ Residence

Irene Publishing’s Meeting Space and Writers’ Residence is a quiet place in the Swedish forest close to the lake Stora Lee. Here, groups of activists and/or academics can meet to reflect, strategize, plan and discuss everything from academic papers to their next campaign.
Writers can find a place to finish a book or report in an environment with few distractions. The Writers’ Residence and Meeting Space is open to groups and individuals working on issues related to peace, nonviolence, civil disobedience, anarchism, constructive resistance, democracy, human rights, economic justice, guerilla gardening, environmental sustainability and all manner of related issues. Your hosts are Jørgen Johansen and Professor Majken Jul Sørensen, both of us activist-academics with decades of experience. We believe that people can create a better world without violence, but that this requires knowledge, skills and analysis. We offer our place as a resource to anyone working for peace, justice and environmental sustainability by peaceful means. who need a quiet place to write or meet. We have an extensive library with well over ten thousand books which you can read while you are here.

Housing options

We have two guest houses, a number of smaller cottages and space for tents. You will have access to all or some of this depending on how many you are.
The maximum number of people we can host is 25.

Rosa Parks guest house

The Rosa Parks guest house is our oldest building for guests, built more than 100 years ago. Here you find a homely atmosphere, and this is where we usually host our long-term guests.

The ground floor of the Rosa Parks guest house has a kitchen which connects to a cozy living room with a fire place. Here you also find a newly renovated bathroom with toilet and shower. This area is suitable as a social area for up to 8 people. Upstairs you find two bedrooms: Stellan’s room (named after one of our regular visitors) has a desk and two single beds, one of which can almost fit two persons (120 cm). The Gandhi bedroom has two single beds, and a desk. The staircase up to these bedrooms is quite steep and narrow.

Across the lawn from the Rosa Parks guest house, we have two bedrooms in a separate building. The Gene Sharp bedroom has space for four persons, two in a double bed, and one in a bunk bed above the double bed. The last bed is a separate single bed. This room has an adjoining toilet and sink with cold water, but no shower.

Directly connected to the Gene Sharp room you find the Zapatista room which has two single beds and a desk. You can access this room either through a separate entrance or through the Gene Sharp room.

Emma Goldman guest house

The Emma Goldman guest house is located a three hundred meter walk from the Rosa Park guest house and is our newest guest house.

On the ground floor you find the conference room, which connects directly to the kitchen. Here you can comfortably gather 18 people for your meeting and cook for them. With a little re-arrangement, you can expand to 25. On the same floor you find a bathroom with toilet and shower and two bedrooms. The Abdul Ghaffar Khan bedroom has a double bed plus a single bed. The neighbouring Orange bedroom has a double bed. Upstairs in this guest house there is a living room with a sofa and armchairs for 10 people which can be used for work in smaller groups or socialising in the evening. Next to this area you find the Elise Boulding bedroom with three single beds. The staircase up to this area is quite steep.

What to bring

All beds have a duvet and a pillow, but you need to bring your own sheets and towels. Our kitchens have ordinary kitchen equipment like pots, pans, plates, cups etc., but you need to bring your own food and plan for your cooking.

Accessibility

Unfortunately, our guest houses are not yet fully accessible for wheelchairs. The Emma Goldman guest house is most accessible, but far from universal design. Wheelchairs can enter directly into the conference room using the ramp, and have access to the bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor. However, the bathroom is old and not designed for wheelchair users. If you are using a wheelchair and think it might work for you under these circumstances, please get in touch and describe your needs. Then we can let you know in more detail what the options and limitations are. If there are wheelchair users among your participants it will be difficult to gather more than 15 people in the conference room.

Library and office

The library and office are located right next to the Emma Goldman house, inside Jørgen and Majken’s own house. You can access after making an appointment.

What does it cost?

The price for staying here is a “sliding scale”. This means that groups and students without funding can stay at a very low cost, while funded groups as well as established writers and academics will pay a higher price.
