Majken is an Honorary Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She received her doctorate in 2015 for her thesis “Humorous Political Stunts: Nonviolent Public Challenges to Power”. In this research project Majken researched humour as a method in nonviolent action, but also used humour practically together with the Swedish anti-militarist network Ofog. Currently Majken is researching two different issues: One project investigates how conflicts can be escalated with nonviolent methods to bring otherwise ignored issues of injustice or oppression on the agenda, the other how civil society actors can use nonviolent action against violent non-state actors such as terrorists, companies and the mafia.

Majken worked for six years for the Norwegian county council in Østfold with universal design, and offers consultations to municipalities, companies and organisations regarding how to make society more inclusive.

Majken holds an MA in peace and reconciliation studies from Coventry University, UK and a bachelor degree in sociology from the University of Tromsø, Norway. She is the author of a book in Danish about nonviolence and alternatives to war: “På barrikaderne for fred – inspirerende historier om ikkevold”and the booklet “Responses to Nonviolent Campaigns”. She has also published articles about humour as a strategy for nonviolent resistance, social movements, nonviolent revolutions and peaceful societies. Together with Ellen Elster, Majken edited Women Conscientious Objectors – An Anthology (London: War Resisters’ International, 2010) and also contributed a chapter. Majken has been involved in War Resisters’ International for a number of years, and served on both the council and the executive committee.
